CPHBAT 2024

The CPHBAT conference took place last week and with 230 highly engaged participants from more than 20 countries we think it was a huge succes!

We generated a newspaper covering the highlights from each day of the conference, so click below to get a recap:

Grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation

The Nielsen Group has been awarded a generous 3 million DKK grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to explore how heat generated by brown adipocytes works as an intracellular inducer of enzymatic processes. Our hypothesis posits that this heat-induced pathway may lead to an enhancement in translational efficiency, facilitated by a specific mRNA modification.

We are deeply grateful for the generous donation and enthusiastic about commencing this exciting project!

Welcome Sonu

We’re very happy to welcome Sonu Kumari as a master’s student in the Nielsen group. She will be working on a project on RNA-sequencing and gene expression.

Welcome Sonu!

Our latest publication is now published in Nature Metabolism

In our most recent work we show that human adipocytes divide into two separate branches during differentiation, and we identify a new adipocyte subtype (named SWAT cells) characterized by increased expression of structural genes and Wnt signaling.

Welcome Laura

We’re very happy to welcome Laura Thomsen as a research assistant in the Nielsen group. Laura has recently finished her master’s studies at CFAS and will be working on a project investigating brown fat activity in breast cancer patients.

Welcome Laura!

Welcome Christoph

We’re very happy to welcome postdoc Christoph Engelhard as the newest member of the Nielsen group. Christoph recently defended his PhD, and his research so far has focused on long-read RNA sequencing-based characterisation of transcriptomic adaptations in cold-activated brown adipose tissue.

A very warm welcome to Christoph!

Grant from Sygeforsikring Danmark

We are very happy to announce that we received a grant of 5 million DKK from Sygeforsikring Danmark for Tora’s project.

Using both cell-based and in vivo studies, the project will investigate how a long, non-coding RNA affects human brown fat development.

Click here to read more about the project and other projects funded by Sygeforsikring Danmark.

The symposium is jointly organized by the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Roskilde University (RUC) and Rigshospitalet and is supported by the Danish Diabetes Academy (DDA). Our goal is to welcome participants from a wide range of research fields and areas, and we would especially like to invite participants from industry, private sector and academia.

We are looking forward to inspiring discussions on mechanisms involving non-coding RNAs and the use of RNAs as innovative therapeutic agents.

We are looking much forward to welcoming you in Copenhagen.

Registration for the DDA meeting on RNA Mechanisms and Therapeutics in Metabolic Disease is now open

DCCC Obecare meeting

Tora attended the ObeCare meeting hosted by Danish Research Center for Cancer and Obesity in Nyborg June 10-11. The meeting focused on how to improve treatment for patients with obesity and cancer, and combined great talks with a very pleasant location. We already look forward to participating in the next ObeCare meeting!

Huge congrats to Maise who just handed in her PhD thesis titled ‘Defining human brown and white adipocytes and identifying a beige depot in adult humans’. Maise will defend her thesis in August.

Congratulations Maise!

We’re very happy to welcome postdoc Karolina Dithrych Hvid as the newest member of the Nielsen group. Karolina recently defended her PhD, and will be working on long, non-coding RNAs and brown adipose metabolism. Her research so far has focused on basic molecular mechanisms of stem cell plasticity with focus on behavior of gene regulatory regions. In her work, she combined single-molecule imaging and targeted chromatin capture sequencing to assess whether transcriptional activity has effect on 3D chromatin structure and kinetics of DNA-protein interactions.

A very warm welcome to Karolina!

Welcome Karolina
